How Do You Get Tennis Elbow
It’s not uncommon for someone who suffers from elbow pain to automatically jump to conclusion and diagnose themselves with tennis elbow. After all, it is the most commonly reported elbow injury. The most bizarre thing about this injury and the individuals who suffer from it, is that they often ask the question – how do you get tennis elbow?
It’s true that many people who get tennis elbow have absolutely no inclination or idea on how they have injured their elbow. But one thing is for certain, they want the pain to go away and in the shortest possible time. Then they ask, if I start tennis elbow exercises will they help me recover from tennis elbow?
Let’s address the burning question, how do most people get tennis elbow in the first place. Because of it’s name, the majority of individuals get confused and are sometimes in disbelief that they actually have tennis elbow. Many sufferers say to me, “…but I don’t even play tennis”. The fact is that playing tennis is not the only cause of this terrible elbow condition. Even people who have never held a tennis racquet in their hand can get tennis elbow.
The overwhelming symptom of tennis elbow is aching, stiffness or pain that is felt on the outside of your elbow. It’s not uncommon for the pain to radiate or spread down your forearm and into your wrist. You may have some tenderness on the outside of your elbow near the bony part of your elbow or the area that sticks out.
So how do you get tennis elbow when you are performing everyday actions or movements that you simply can’t stop doing?
To be totally honest with you, any type of grasping or gripping actions over an extended period of time can cause small micro tears of your extensor tendon, which attaches at your elbow. For example, if you lift heavy items all day long or are required to work with tools or even work at a computer 8 hours a day, can all cause tennis elbow.
Some jobs, careers, activities, hobbies, sports and movements can be considered more of a high risk for developing tennis elbow than others. For example, manual labour jobs, hairdressers, dentists, nurses, factory workers, postal workers, warehouse workers, mechanics, plumbers, computer programmers, musicians, gardeners, painters, racquet sports, baseball, football, volleyball, cricket, or any other movements where you hold, grasp, or grip down tightly on an object for an extended period of time is considered “high risk” for getting tennis elbow.
When the muscles in your forearm are overworked and strained, this puts extreme stress on the tendons that attach your muscles to your bones. In the case of a tennis elbow injury and how you get it, the repetitive action of gripping or holding an item tightly for an extended period of time causes your extensor tendon, which you can think of as a rope, to fray due to the strain and pressure. When your extensor tendon starts to fray, your elbow pain increases when you perform even the most basic everyday tasks such as shaking someone’s hand, turning a doorknob, turning a key in a door, or even holding a coffee mug.
What many people who get tennis elbow don’t know is that inflammation and swelling will only be present for the first 2-3 weeks of their injury. Once you’ve gone past this time period, you won’t have any swelling or inflammation. Beyond the 2-3 weeks, you will start to develop degeneration of your tendon. The longer you wait to treat your tennis elbow, the more your extensor tendon will degenerate. The only way to repair and build your tendon back up is through specific exercise and stretches and of course a little time away from what caused your injury in the first place.
