tennis elbow in off season Just because it is the off season it doesn’t mean you should simply hang up your tennis racquet and hibernate like a bear.  Especially if you are a tennis player who suffers from bouts of tennis elbow on and off throughout the season.

The off season is a great time to address your injury and finally do something about it so you permanently put your injury behind you and enjoy a pain free upcoming tennis season.  Even if you play other racquet sports such as badminton, squash or racquet ball, you too should take proactive measures right now to nip your injury in the butt.

There are some simple steps you can take right now that will drastically improve your odds of recovery and they don’t involve opening your wallet too much.

First, if you wear an elbow compression strap or armbands, it is time to say goodbye to it and toss it in the trash.  If you continue to wear one, you will never fully get over your tennis elbow injury.  Sure these bands feel great when you are wearing it and playing but what do they really do?

While they do provide support and pressure to your forearm when you grip and squeeze tightly on your racquet, medically they do nothing to help advance your recovery from tennis elbow, so why even wear one a tennis elbow armband in the first place?

The next bit of advice is to take closer inspection of your equipment.  That means not only ensuring that your racquet is the right size and weight for your body but that you are using the right strings, the tension is elbow friendly and the grip is not too small for your hand.

Far too many players overlook these simple things but they can make a huge difference in not only your tennis elbow but your play as well.  When choosing strings for your racquet, you should opt for natural gut over synthetic.  They are softer and provide better shock absorption over synthetic gut strings.

When it comes to choosing a racquet, make  sure you select a heavier racket to help absorb the shock.  Look for a one that is thinner and more flexible as well.  As technology advances if you can find one, select a racquet that offers a vibration dampening system.

When it comes to getting the proper grip size based on your hand, you should select a larger grip which helps prevent torque.  Many players make the mistake of selecting a racquet with a small grip.  What this does is forces you too over grip and squeeze to tightly on your racquet with each hit.  This is contributing to your tennis elbow and causing forearm pain and agony.

Another thing to take into consideration is your ground stroke.  To be more specific, your backhand.  People who hit one handed backhands are at higher risk of getting tennis elbow than those who used two hands.  The whip of your arm when making contact with the ball puts a huge amount of pressure on the forearm flexors and extensors.  Overtime, small tears develop in the extensor muscles and tendons that attach at your elbow.  This when you experience elbow pain.

If you want to keep hitting one handed backhands, consider talking to your local tennis pro and have he/she look at your form and technique.
